ALIF/XLIF Procedures
(Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion/ Xtreme Lateral lumbar Interbody Fusion)
These refer to anterior approaches to the discs in the lumbar spine. These procedures have a different risk/benefit profile than posterior lumbar spine fusions. The rationale for their use along with risks/benefits should be explored with the patient specific conditions in mind.
Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (with bone graft and metal plate)
ALIF is generally used to treat back or leg pain caused by degenerative disc disease. The surgeon will stabilize the spine by fusing vertebrae together with bone graft material.
Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (with bone graft and pedicle screws)
ALIF is generally used to treat back or leg pain caused by degenerative disc disease. The surgeon will stabilize the spine by fusing vertebrae together with bone graft material.
